Witchcraft for Wayward Girls
★★★★★
This is the longest book I've read this year, and in the shortest amount of time. Took me only 2 days to complete it. Basically, this is a story about the cruelties suffered by young women, and the desire for revenge for those enacted cruelties. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart, as it deals heavily with pregnancy and birth, as well as a fair amount of gore. From Diane the deluded social worker pretending to be hip and friendly with the girls at the home just to win them over and traffick their babies, to the sanctimonious headmistress who treated the pregnant girls like sinful trash, to the doctors and nurses who humiliated Fern and treated her with nothing but disdain, almost everyone in this book pissed me off, well, apart from the main coven. However, it opened my eyes to the reality of the times and how there really were homes like this for young unwed mothers. It's very close to my heart, because my own grandmother was one, and she was sent away and never saw her baby again. But what I do love about this book is how the girls all came together to protect each other, and how sisterhood and friendship can withstand any amout of evil fuckery from the patriarchal christian status quo. I sat in a parking lot for over an hour trying to finish this book. Grady Hendrix really did his research and produced a story with brutality, magic, and heart.
